Report and Classify Disk-to-Disk Backups
Comprehensive search and reporting on files and email in disk-based backups

Index Engines provides direct access to individual files and email stored on disk-to-disk backup platforms and VTLs (virtual tape libraries). Using patented access technology, disk-based backup images are crawled and indexed allowing for comprehensive search and reporting of the content. Backup data can then be intelligently managed and streamlined to support data center polices and optimization.

Disk-based backups provide convenient and powerful disaster recovery capabilities. However, understanding what exists and determining what has value for long-term retention is complex. Leveraging Index Engines' direct indexing platform, content such as user files and email are scanned and indexed at a metadata level, or, optionally, full text. This allows for reporting on the content to help determine its business value. Reports include file types and extensions, servers and location, times (created, modified, accessed), Active Directory group membership, owner, size, tags and more. These reports allow data to be classified by location, file count, and data size.

Typical examples of how data can be managed is through the use of the last accessed report. Understanding the capacity of data that is being backed up repeatedly, but has not been accessed in over three years, will help manage the data on the network and migrate it offline and out of the backup window. Additionally, reports on Active Directory users that are inactive or no longer part of the organization, allows for the classification of data that is abandoned and no longer of value.

Utilizing Index Engines for reporting and classification on disk-based backup data will allow for clean-up and optimization of backup environments. Data that no longer has value can be migrated offline, and data that is aged and abandoned can be managed appropriately.
