Tapeless D2D Backups
Avoid tape backups of disk storage

Backing up to disk is an efficient process to support disaster recovery.   The vision of going tapeless is attractive and cost effective. However many Data Domain clients are still making tapes off the back end and storing these in expensive offsite storage vaults. Once tapes cycle out of DR the IT organization does not know what to do with them, and is concerned about writing over them for fear they will destroy sensitive and critical legal files and email. So tapes are sent offsite for long term retention.

Index Engines is partnered with EMC to eliminate the use of tapes for long-term retention. Once data is backed up to Data Domain, Index Engines can index the new backups, apply policies, and extract the relevant files and email to disk for long term preservation. Once the data required by legal is secure, there is no need to send the tapes to offsite storage for long term retention.

Working with Index Engines, EMC Data Domain clients can become truly tapeless and also leverage their existing backup environment to support long-term retention requirements for legal and compliance.

This new strategy turns the traditional long-term retention of backup tapes or D2D2T (disk-to-disk-to-tape) to the more streamlined retention on disk as Index Engines works with Data Domain systems and leverages the existing backup process to automatically identify and extract specific files and email for regulatory, compliance and legal applications according to pre-defined policies.

In the past, once D2D backups leave the restoration window, they were likely stored on tape long-term and therefore become less accessible in offsite storage vaults. With this new approach, important business data on the Data Domain system required for legal and compliance purposes can be extracted and preserved based on retention policies.

Index Engines automatically indexes backup images, identifies the useful content, collects what is relevant and preserves it, making it available for compliance and litigation purposes.
