HOLMDEL, NJ — October 31, 2011 — Index Engines In honor of Halloween, launches a new program today which offers review of up to 40“mystery” backup tapes for $50 per tape (plus S&H) through November 30th. Most corporations have mystery tapes - old backup tapes lying around on shelves and in offsite storage - contents of which are unknown but could come back to haunt them. Index Engines’ “Look and Learn” cloud service delivers detailed knowledge of user files and email on legacy tapes without the need to create the original backup environment. Information governance strategies are now incorporating legacy tape content to secure what should be saved and purge what is no longer required, managing future liability.
With Look and Learn, tape formats such as LTO/DLT/AIT/etc. backed up using NetBackup, Commvault, Backup Exec and more can be indexed, searched and reviewed to reveal tape contents. The system generates detailed reports that profile the user data on tape, file types, dates, owners, and original locations. This new cloud service exiles the Pandora’s Box factor associated with mystery tapes so IT canorganize, index or dispose of the tapes, thereby saving long term storage expenses and reducing risk.
“We deal with corporations that have tens or hundreds of thousands of backup tapes”, comments Jim McGann, VP of Information Discovery at Index Engines. “Many of these tapes, if not all, have unknown content. With this new technology we help them to see what is on those tapes and manage their long term liability at a reasonable cost, whether they have 40 tapes or 40,000.”
Backup tapes are sent to Index Engines’ facility in New Jersey where they are scanned and fully indexed. Then, via a web-based search interface, clients can browse, search and report on the tapes’ contents. Extraction of specific user files and email from the tapes can be done for an additional fee.
Don’t let the specter of legacy data haunt you any longer. Contact Index Engines today.
