Many organizations have implemented a data protection process, by backing up to EMC Data Domain de-duplication storage systems or other disk to disk backup solutions. These backups secure all corporate data for disaster recovery purposes, as well as, valuable corporate records that are required by legal and compliance teams. However, because this content has been locked away in the backup image it has not been accessible. Therefore, leveraging data contained in backup for any other purpose other than disaster recovery has been impossible.
Index Engines Octane for Data Domain enables EMC Data Domain and other disk based backup users the ability to leverage the content that has been backed-up. Octane has engineered access to common backup formats (e.g. NetBackup, TSM, NetWorker, etc.) so that they can be searched and analyzed according to business policies. These policy based searches can be high-level metadata, such as user mailboxes, or detailed queries based on file or email content, locations and data ranges. Once the relevant set of data is identified within the backup image, it can be extracted and managed in an archive to support information governance requirements. This allows a small subset, typically less than 5% of the backup data, to be retained for long-term access and management.
Turning backup into a usable archive extends the value of the Data Domain platform, and takes advantage of the data collected by the backup process. No need to perform an additional crawl of the network to find and collect data, backup has already performed this process. As new backups occur policies will be automatically applied and the relevant data secured in the archive.
Octane allows for powerful search and management of backup data, automatically applying policies and retention periods, so compliance and legal teams get access to what they need. Using an intuitive user interface, users can define policy and also access specific files and email based on full content or metadata criteria. Since user have access to all the data they need, and can archive what needs to be retained, backup tapes no longer need to be created from the Data Domain images for long term archiving and offsite storage.
Octane for Data Domain/D2D Backup works with the existing backup process and automatically extracts specific files and email according to policy into a repository that is used by the legal and compliance teams, who need access to these business records.
