New personal data regulations. Threats of cyberattacks. Support for retention and archiving policies. Cost of storing files in the data center. New cloud migration strategies. How organizations manage and protect user data is fundamentally changing.

Index Engines tackles these challenges with the only enterprise class solution that supports user data across both primary and backup storage with petabyte-class scalability and performance. Index Engines’ clients are empowered to manage, analyze and govern data, controlling costs and supporting regulatory requirements.

Backup Catalog Management
Retire legacy backup catalog software and maintain access to tape data

Many organizations are interested in switching backup software, or have inherited legacy backup environments from a merger or acquisition, resulting in the need to maintain a non-production backup software instance. Index Engines provides a cost-effective solution that eliminates the requirement to maintain non-production backup software in order to access to legacy catalogs and data.

For data centers looking to transition to a new backup software provider or retire legacy backup software, Index Engines can ingest the legacy catalog and manage it going forward. This eliminates the lock that backup software vendors have on clients due to the legacy data that is hidden away in their proprietary format. Index Engines unlocks this data and makes migration easy and cost effective.

Index Engines currently supports ingestion and management of catalogs from CommVault, IBM’s Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) and Veritas' NetBackup, with additional formats coming soon.

How It Works

Index Engines software can be rapidly deployed in the data center and ingests the legacy backup catalog from the media server. Index Engines manages the backup catalog for the retired backup software going forward and provides search and reporting against legacy files and email repositories.

When specific user files or emails are required from legacy tapes to support eDiscovery, legal and compliance requests, Index Engines can provide detailed insight to the catalogs metadata fields (e.g., file name, path, dates, file type) for specific files and email databases. The reports and listings are dependent on the specific backup software.

Once the relevant data is located and the tape’s volume label identified, Index Engines processes the backup set, allowing the file and email contents to be searched and accessed. Individual files and email or mailboxes can then be extracted from tape as necessary. No restoration using the original backup software is required.

Index Engines eliminates the pain associated with managing legacy data as part of the transition to a new backup vendor, or non-production backup software environments that must be maintained to provide access to old backup data. Index Engines takes legacy backup data in the current vendor’s format (and even a generation or two of older platforms) that is locked away and makes it easily accessible after switching to a new backup vendor.

  • Simplify the transition of switching backup software vendors and eliminates the need for restoration with legacy backup software.
  • Report and classify legacy tape data based on catalog metadata.
  • Maintain access to old information without using the original environment.
  • Manage long-term risk according to corporate policy.
  • Reduce off-site storage expenses by remediating legacy tapes.
  • Processes antiquated backup sets, allowing for the file and email contents to be searched and accessed.
  • Extract individual files and email from tape as necessary without restoration.
  • Efficient, high-speed processing allows for management of large volumes of tapes.
  • Ingest multiple catalogs including TSM, NetBackup and Commvault, perform a unified search across metadata for more comprehensive analysis.
  • Dynamic reporting and classification of catalog data, using an intuitive graphical interface, supporting even the largest environments.
  • Supports reporting on production and non-production environments, including the ability to rebuild the catalog if a current version no longer exists.
